Church History I - Mar 04, 2018

Church History  I- This course is intended to provide an introductory survey of the history of the Orthodox Church, her life and experience in changing contexts to the ninth century. It seeks to orient students to basic issues that will arise throughout the history of the Church. The issues addressed include: factors that contributed to the rise, expansion, and eventual triumph of Christianity; spread of Christianity in the Mediterranean, the Middle East, the Caucasus, and Europe; Christian relation to Judaism, the Roman state, Greek philosophy, and other aspects of the surrounding culture; major heresies; schisms; Apostolic Councils; etc

Doctrine I Three major doctrines of the Orthodox Church will be explored in the doctrine 1: those of (a) the doctrine of God, and in particular the understanding of the Trinity - God as three persons sharing in, and expressing one essence; (b) the Church’s understanding of the nature, meaning and purpose of human life, including the doctrines of Creation, Fall, and Salvation, and (c) the union of divine and human natures in Jesus Christ.

Church Fathers I -  The Fathers of the 2nd to early 5th centuries: Apostolic Fathers, Ante-Nicene Fathers and Nicene Fathers. St. Ignatius of Antioch; St. Justin Martyr; St. Irenaeus; Tertullian; St. Clement of Alexandria; St. Cyprian of Carthage; Origen. Trinitarian Controversy. Age-appropriate themes and means of Christian education.

·      Church History II & III          The course is designed to introduce students to historically significant events in the Orthodox Church from the 9th to the 21st century. The course surveys all regions of the world Orthodox Christian presence, especially North America – the latter is the subject for the second section of the course. This course is designed to introduce students with major events and influential individuals in Orthodox Church worldwide and in North America. In North America, the Orthodox Church has been active since the end of the 18th century. Currently, the Orthodox Church in America (OCA) is an autocephalous national church in the United States. Its Canadian archdiocese has an official name Orthodox Church in Canada. Besides these national Orthodox churches, there are several other jurisdictions that represent canonical overseas based churches. This course will deal with the spread and evolution of Orthodoxy worldwide and in North America, its unique character, and important recent developments.

The foundation and goal of Orthodox spirituality and ethics. The creation of humanity in the image of God. The fall of man. Redemption through Christ. Incorporation into the Church. Deification. The means of Christian spiritual growth. Co-operation with the grace given in the Holy Mysteries. Our calling as Prophets, Priests, and Kings. Specific Tools for spiritual Growth: fasting, prayer, love of neighbour, the virtues, lives and teachings of the saints. Moral life and reconciliation with all as the basis for, and fruit of communion with God. Orthodox perspectives on , marriage, family, suffering, death and current ethical dilemmas. The goal of life in Christ: becoming like Christ, acquiring the Holy Spirit, resurrection.

·      Holy Scripture I       

A comprehensive introduction to, and overview of, Holy Scripture. Jesus Christ as the key to understanding Scripture. What is the Bible? By whom and for whom was it written? Types of literature in the Bible. The Bible as revelation – the word of God. Geographical settings of the Bible. Historical background to the Bible. A survey of the books of the Bible with brief summaries of their content, purpose and themes. Main themes of the Bible. The place, significance and use of Holy Scripture in the Orthodox Church. Canon of Scripture. The Septuagint translation. Personal Reading of Holy Scripture. The changing place and influence of the Bible in European and North American civilization over the centuries. The Books of Genesis and Psalms, and a few other Old Testament Writings will be considered in depth and in relation to their importance within the liturgical and doctrinal life of the Orthodox Church.
